- Speech-language pathologist
I use a responsive, family-centered, trust-based approach to feeding therapy. A child should lead the learning process and trust that adults will offer appropriate experiences to support him or her along the way. My treatment approach includes a strong focus not only on building a child’s skills, but on empowering parents and caregivers with knowledge. I believe judgment has no place in this process. My mission is to help families fill mealtimes with joy, connection, and nourishment.

My journey as a feeding therapist began back in 1989 when I worked at La Rabida Children's Hospital in Chicago. Aside from my work with the medically complex in-patient population there I also was involved in the start of the Failure to Thrive Outpatient Clinic which incorporated nutrition and family dynamics. My philosophy has changed over time but has always included a whole child and family approach and has always incorporated what we now call a "responsive feeding" approach/component.

We believe in family centered care. Parents/caregivers are included and active part of all sessions to the extent they desire. Children are one part of a family unit-so it is important to include parents, and siblings sometimes. We also do community based feeding, because children eat in lots of environments. Finally- feeding a is a multi-sensory experience. That means before we come to the table we need to be well regulated with our sensory systems processing well.
