CFG Spotlight Series: Phalycia Barrios, Parenting a Child Who Struggled to Eat
Rylee Rose Barrios defied the odds from birth, arriving at just 24 weeks gestation and spending 5 ½ months in the hospital. She began receiving support through Early Intervention upon coming home, and is now thriving at school and ongoing therapy. Recent medical challenges have not dimmed her spirit, and she remains fiercely independent, social, and chatty. She finds joy in her family, has found a love of cooking, and dreams of becoming a chef one day. With the support of her family Rylee has blossomed, but the road to get there wasn’t easy. Phalycia, Rylee’s mom, faced the scary world of the NICU, medical procedures, and a myriad of therapies with Rylee head on. One of the significant challenges they faced were mealtimes. Rylee received a G tube during her NICU stay, and Phalycia and Rylee’s family had to learn how to support her feeding development in an unexpected way. Join us to hear Phalycia and Rylee’s story, the ups and downs of mealtime challenges with a feeding tube, and the ever-important experience of being a parent for a child who struggled to eat.
