DESCRIPTION:Course Description:\nWhen children are anxious eaters, mealtimes become stressful for families. These children may be extremely picky eaters, children with diagnosed or undiagnosed anxiety, autism spectrum disorder, or extreme mealtime worry. This course will discuss and demonstrate practical strategies to support children and families who experience mealtime worry. This course will focus on building trust and responding to the child’s reaction to mealtime change. Parent success will be emphasized in the strategies presented.\nCourse Objectives:\n\nDefine the principles of the Get Permission Approach to Pediatric Feeding\n\nAnswer: Who are anxious eaters?\n\nAnswer: How does worry influence eating in children?\n\nDescribe the evaluation process in understanding the THEN and NOW of anxious mealtimes.\n\nList ways to empower the family and the child in the feeding partnership.\n\nIdentify and interpret child and parent communication, cues, and synthesize information to adapt and adjust treatment strategies for success.\n\nDescribe strategies to help promote enjoyment, confidence, and internal motivation at mealtimes for anxious eaters.\n\nDefine the Circle of Sensitivity and relate it to feeding treatment for anxious eaters.\n\nDescribe the steps to “Re-Define TRY IT” and list ways to apply interventions in treatment in the home or clinic.\n\nIdentify the sensory properties of food and list specific ways to utilize those variables in treatment.\n\nList ways to transition clinical success to home and parent success.\n\nSet goals and document progress for anxious eaters using family-friendly Get Permission vocabulary.\n\n \nSpeaker: Marsha Dunn Klein MEd, OTR/L, FAOTA is a pediatric occupational therapist who specializes in feeding infants and young children. She has a B.S. in occupational therapy from Boston University and a Masters of Education in Special Education with an emphasis on physical disabilities from the University of Arizona. She coauthored Pre-Feeding Skills, 2nd Edition and the Homemade Blended Formula Handbook (both with Suzanne Evans Morris, Ph.D.).\nContinuing Education:\nThis course is begin offered for 1.05 ASHA CEUS (Intermediate level Professional area)\nIL Early Intervention CEUs, AOTA CEUs and CDR CEUS are all available.\n \nCancellations must be in writing and will incur a $50 fee. We are unable to give refunds after September 2, 2019. If the Chicago Feeding Group or speaker should need to cancel, course fees will be refunded or transferred to another course at the discretion of the participant.\n
