SUMMARY:Facilitating a Positive Relationship with Food for Elementary Aged Children
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jenny McGlothlin, MS, CCC-SLP\nClinicians who engage in work with older children around picky eating issues must navigate the value and significance of each child’s trust journey with food while empowering them to expand their eating on their own terms. Leading our clients through practical and validating experiences while supporting them with gentle facilitation can open the door for growth and self acceptance. By teaching our clients how to gain autonomy and control, and helping caregivers change the dynamic at home, we can provide a service that will last a lifetime. Four general themes will be explored to achieve this goal: understanding their eating, discovering and supporting their appetite (including the role played by anxiety) rehabilitating their relationship with food, and learning to like new foods. Working with the client to set goals for their own eating, to reframe their experiences with food, and to learn a new food language are aspects of intervention that require a different set of skills than when working with the toddler or preschool population. Through lecture, video examples, and thought exercises, we will explore this topic to better understand how to effectively treat this population.\n \nImportant Registration Information\nTickets are available for Parent/Caregivers, Students, or Professionals.
